Camu Camu berries have been used by Amazon Indians for hundreds of years. This shrub grows abundantly in the Peruvian rainforest along the Amazon River.
A fruit tree with a bushy foliage growing to some 2-8 meters tall with a small, sweet smelling white flower. The fruit is orange – purple in color in 10 to 12 mm in diameter, about the size of a lemon. It’s made of yellow pulp with two seeds and tastes sour making it difficult to be eaten on its own. South American natives would blend it into a sweetened juice drink.
It is traditionally used as a treatment for infections and as a pain reliever. Poultices made from its bark treats rheumatism and wounds.
Camu Camu contains an impressive array of nutrients like vitamins, trace minerals, protein, essential amino acids and other important nutrients needed in maintaining a healthy body.
But what is more important is that this super fruit has the highest natural vitamin C density of any food on earth. Check this out: typical oranges normally have about 1,000 ppm of vitamin C and the highest it can get is 3,000 ppm, which is very unusual considering the way they are grown commercially these days. Camu berry on the other hand can have a concentration level of 50,000 ppm… That’s 50 times more! This volume of vitamin C together with other vitamins, antioxidants and amino acids enable it to block disease causing inflammation from forming inside the body. It is also an effective defense against cancer causing free radicals. It can help you lose weight and build healthy muscles, thereby improving both functions and posture.
The nutrients found in this berry can sustain a healthy reproductive system by cleansing the body of toxins that damages reproductive function that can lead to infertility. It also reduces levels of the stress hormone cortisol and facilitates the uptake of serotonin. This means that eating this berry will make you happy, a powerful treatment method for depression. Camu camu contain an amino acid called valine that improves focus and prevent buildup of plaque in the brain that leads to conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
Here’s more… this super fruit can aid in healing wounds, iron absorption, breaking down histamine, protects the lung, and reduces allergy symptoms. It has an anti-aging properties too.
There is not much safety information of camu camu when used as a medicine. Pregnant and lactating women are better off avoiding camu camu as a medicine and food. Consult your health provider and stay safe.
On your next smoothie… try topping it with camu powder after blending instead of putting it together with the other ingredients.
