Pomelo is known to be the largest type of citrus from the rutaceae family. A tropical organic superfood that is said to have originated from the Pacific island and have been a part of the human diet for centuries.
The name Pomelo is thought to be an alteration of the Dutch pompelmoes or Citrus maxima and is believed to be the forerunner of the grapefruit. This organic superfood is also said to have been cultivated in China for thousands of years and as a commercial trade traveled the Silk Road to Europe.
For those who are not familiar with Pomelo fruit, it is usually pear shaped and made of thick, spongy rind, which is not that difficult to peel. The color of the fruit outside changes from green while it is unripe to yellow as it ripens. Being the largest type in the citrus family, its size ranges from 6 to 12 inches in diameter and weighs up to 4 pounds, although some larger types may reach up to 22 pounds. Its taste is quite pleasant, not tart or tangy and can get really sweet.
