Springtime sees a lot of crops in season, and much of them are wholly tempting to eat, and some of them are superfoods. Yes, superfoods. Superfoods are those foods that are generally packed with more vitamins and minerals than the average food. One of them growing this season are blueberries! Blueberries are not only your all-around go to fruit, but they are also packed with an assortment of vitamins and minerals that your body will thank you for.
Blueberries are known to be sweet, tart, and luscious, and very juicy too! But sweet is sometimes a problem (or at least too much of it). I am talking to all the diabetics out there. Balancing your sugar level is a lot of work, more so if you are body conscious. But worry no more; when craving for something sweet, eat a handful of these blueberry babies and your craving for something sweet will be gone. Blueberries naturally contain antioxidants and have low glycemic index, and if you're worrying about gaining weight, don't be! Blueberries are also one of the top foods for weight loss. 1 cup of it only contains 80 calories, with 4grams of fiber, so mix it up with your oatmeal or with yogurt for a healthy and sinless dessert. Blueberries take a moment on your lips, and none on your hips. Or waist. Or any part of your body, for that matter.
So, you're stressed, which makes your skin look dull and dry, and your puling your hair (or it’s simply falling off your head) because you don’t know what to do. So, hit the spas, take a time to revitalize, and while doing that, indulge in blueberries (they are that good). Blueberries are great for revitalizing your body and your look. These little blue fruits are big on antioxidants (blueberries has the highest amount of it!) that prevent or delay different cell damage, and phytoflavinoids that safeguards our body from stress and its harmful effects. Eating at least half a cup a day will be sure to keep stress away and keep you looking vibrant and healthy. And never getting hungry before, after, or during spa sessions. Aaaaaaaaaah.
But what about your brain? Seems like every other part of your body is getting the nutrition they need, so how about your think tank? Well, not to boast or anything, but blueberries have some goodies for your brain too. Remember the antioxidant-rich fact? That property makes blueberry the "brainberry" – it protects the brain from stress due to oxidation and help it reduce the effects of Alzheimer's and dementia, according to Scripps Memorial Hospital. It also improves memory and helps in increasing cognitive function, as well as decreasing the effects of cognitive problems related associated with aging according to studies conducted by the American Chemical Society. Aside from that, blueberries also boast (well now it’s boasting) anti-inflammatory properties, which help in preventing chronic illnesses. Blueberries can also lower the risk of heart disease and cancer, among others.
Those health benefits seem a lot for those tiny berries to have, but indeed these berries possess them. Also, frozen berries are as good as fresh berries as they can retain their antioxidant properties; and wherein organically grown berries are safer for they do without the added chemicals. But, you can't be eating blueberries all day! You simply just can't, guv'nor. If you want to maximize the benefits of blueberries, incorporate them into your balanced meal plan (steer clear from dried or preserved blueberries for they have added sugar and preservatives), with regular exercise. And always remember, proportion is key! Power to the berry!
